AI and Expanding the Boundaries of Research
AI offers an opportunity to rethink how we gather, connect, and analyze information. By acting as a brainstorming partner, tutor, and tool for deeper exploration, AI can help students branch beyond the bubble of a single classroom or discipline. As educators, we are limited by time, expertise, and the constraints of our curriculum. AI helps fill those gaps, introducing students to ideas, theories, and primary texts they may not otherwise encounter. FERPA, Privacy, and Legal Responsibility
As educators, it is our duty to protect student data and ensure compliance with privacy laws such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and California Education Code Section 49073.1. FERPA mandates that students' personal and educational records remain confidential unless parents or guardians provide consent. Mishandling data or permitting students to create unauthorized accounts without parental approval could lead to legal repercussions and compromise student safety.
